Promote Gender Equality & Inclusive Communities

Advancing the rights of women, girls, youth, and marginalised groups, so everyone can live with dignity, exercise their rights, and contribute to development.

Power for Equality project in partnership with Women Empowerment Link
Overview

Safe Steps Foundation Kenya advances gender equality by addressing the structural barriers that prevent women, girls, youth, persons with disabilities, and other marginalised populations from fully participating in social, economic, and political life.

We apply a rights-based and community-led approach that strengthens local institutions, transforms harmful social norms, and promotes equal access to opportunities and essential services. Our interventions combine community dialogue, leadership development, public awareness campaigns, policy advocacy, capacity strengthening, and engagement with traditional, religious, and government leaders.

Together, these foster inclusive communities where everyone can live with dignity, exercise their rights, and contribute meaningfully to development. By strengthening local ownership and promoting positive social change, we support communities to become more resilient, equitable, and inclusive.

Equality is not a destination we arrive at. It is a practice we build, together, every day.

How We Work

A rights-based, community-led approach

Six ways we advance gender equality with communities, not for them.

01

Community dialogue

Open conversations that surface needs and shift harmful norms from within.

02

Leadership development

Building the confidence and skills of women and girls to lead.

03

Public awareness campaigns

Behaviour-change campaigns that challenge stigma and stereotypes.

04

Policy advocacy

Pushing for gender-responsive policies and equal access to services.

05

Capacity strengthening

Equipping local institutions to sustain inclusive change.

06

Engaging leaders

Working with traditional, religious, and government leaders as allies.

The Change We Seek

What gender equality makes possible

01

Girls stay in school

Fewer barriers, more girls completing their education.

02

Women lead and earn

Greater voice, income, and independence for women.

03

Harmful norms shift

Communities move away from practices that hold people back.

04

Everyone belongs

Inclusive communities where all can participate with dignity.
