Protect Democracy, Justice & Human Rights
Empowering citizens to understand, claim, and defend their constitutional rights, and strengthening the institutions that are meant to protect them.
We believe that sustainable development can only thrive where democracy, justice, and human rights are respected and protected.
Safe Steps Foundation Kenya empowers citizens to understand, claim, and defend their constitutional rights, while strengthening the capacity of institutions to uphold transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.
Our work focuses on civic education, human rights awareness, legal empowerment, policy advocacy, community accountability initiatives, and the protection of civic space. We collaborate with civil society organisations, public institutions, community leaders, and human rights defenders to strengthen democratic governance and ensure that vulnerable and marginalised communities have equal access to justice and opportunities to participate in public affairs.
Where rights are protected, communities are safer, fairer, and freer.
Rights that people can actually claim
Six ways we protect democracy, justice, and human rights.
Civic education
Helping citizens understand the Constitution and how their rights work.
Human rights awareness
Raising awareness of rights, and how to claim and defend them.
Legal empowerment
Practical support so people can access justice, not just hear about it.
Policy advocacy
Influencing the laws and policies that protect rights and the rule of law.
Community accountability
Holding public institutions to their commitments and duties.
Protecting civic space
Defending the freedoms that let citizens organise, speak, and take part.
How this work happens on the ground
Standing with defenders, informing citizens, and holding institutions to account.

Human Rights Defenders Support
Standing with, protecting, and building the capacity of human rights defenders through consultative workshops and community working groups.

Human Rights Education & Awareness
Public awareness and press engagement that inform citizens of their rights, including on moments like International Women's Day.

Legal Empowerment
Institutional strengthening and legal awareness that help vulnerable and marginalised communities reach justice.

Policy Advocacy & Dialogue
Policy dialogues that bring communities, defenders, and duty bearers together to shape rights-based policy.

Community Accountability
Community-level initiatives, including strengthening barazas, that hold institutions to account for their commitments.

Protecting Civic Space
Working with civil society and community leaders to defend the space for citizens to organise, speak, and participate freely.
Rights are only real when people can understand, claim, and defend them.

Institutions are accountable
